The Branding Problem
Self-care has been packaged as reward - something earned after difficulty deserved after productivity permitted after enough has been accomplished. This framing guarantees failure. Rewards are the first thing eliminated when life becomes demanding. And life is almost always demanding.
The reframe that changes everything is simpler than it sounds: self-care is not what you do when you have time. It is what makes time work.
What Makes a Practice Last
The practices that endure are the ones attached to identity rather than outcome. Not I am doing this to lose weight or reduce stress but I am someone who moves daily who sleeps well who tends to their body with care.
Identity-based habits survive the pressure that goal-based habits do not. They persist not because conditions are perfect but because they have become part of who you are. The goal is not to maintain a wellness routine. It is to become someone for whom wellness is simply how they live.
A practice that collapses under pressure was never really a practice.

The most common obstacle to building a self-care practice is waiting for the right conditions - more time more money more stability more certainty. Those conditions do not arrive. What arrives instead is the next week which looks much like this one. Beginning now with what you have is not a compromise. It is the only way a practice ever starts.
