The Category That Follows You

Most people know their skin type the way they know their star sign - with vague confidence and limited accuracy. The category was assigned at some point and has never been seriously questioned. But skin changes with age season climate diet and stress.

Caring for the skin you had at twenty is not the same as caring for the skin you have now. The first step is looking clearly at what is actually there.

How to Actually Identify Your Type

The most reliable method is the bare-face test. Cleanse gently apply nothing and observe your skin over three to four hours. Where does tightness appear? Where does shine develop? What is the texture in different zones?

This observation done more than once across different seasons gives far more accurate information than any quiz. Skin changes. Your type at twenty may not be your type at forty. Reassess periodically rather than relying on a category that was set years ago.

Caring for the wrong skin type is the most common reason routines fail.

The Five Skin Types Explained

True skin typing looks at oil production hydration levels sensitivity and barrier function together - not just whether your face feels tight or shiny by midday.

  • Normal skin maintains consistent hydration and oil balance throughout the day.

  • Dry skin produces insufficient sebum and loses water quickly especially in low humidity.

  • Oily skin produces excess sebum often in response to dehydration or harsh cleansing.

  • Combination skin has distinct zones with different needs typically an oily T-zone and drier cheeks.

  • Sensitive skin reacts readily to ingredients temperature and stress indicating a compromised barrier.

Building a Routine That Responds

Once you have an accurate sense of your skin type the next step is building a routine that responds to what it actually needs rather than what a marketing category suggests. This usually means fewer products applied more consistently. A simple well-matched routine maintained over months consistently outperforms a complex routine that changes with every new purchase.
